SMALLVILLE: Saying Goodbye to Chloe Sullivan, Part I

This Friday’s episode of SMALLVILLE could be a much more important one than is being promoted. There is a very real chance this could be the final appearance of Chloe Sullivan, the only character other than Clark Kent who has been around since the first episode of the series.

By the promo and preview clips that have been released you’d think that this week’s episode, “Fortune”, was nothing more than a fluff, stand-alone, filler episode. Take a look for yourself…

There is one important detail that neither of these videos mention. When Allison Mack agreed to come back to SMALLVILLE for season 10 she signed on for five episodes.

The first of the five was the season premier. She returned to the show for its three most recent episodes and this weeks episode will be her fourth consecutive and fifth of the season.

There has not been any announcement that Mack will be a part of the series finale, so either her appearance in the final episode of SMALLVILLE is a very well-kept secret, or this Friday is the last time we’ll ever see Chloe Sullivan.

I’d like to see as many first season characters around for the final episode as possible and since Chloe has made it this long it’d be a shame for her not to be around at the end.

On the other hand, Chloe is not traditionally a part of the Superman mythology (although she has recently been written into the comics) so not having her appear in the final episode could just be a way of trying to line up the show with the Superman we all know and love.

I’m not exactly Chloe Sullivan’s biggest fan. I used to love the character but the last few years I’ve lost some interest in her. But anytime a central character leaves a show I’d at least like to see it promoted. Give people a chance to tune in and say goodbye.

If this is to be the last we see of Chloe I hope she receives a proper send off in the episode. I’m really worried from the promos that she won’t, but it is promising to see that her character seems to be a major part of the plot.

Maybe there’s not any talk of Chloe leaving because Allison is returning for the finale. But I have a feeling that’s not the case. However, Allison is currently appearing in a play that is ending it’s run on March 6. If my math is correct that would be just about the right time for her to hop over to the SMALLVILLE set for filming of the finale.

Tune in this Friday at 8/7 central on The CW to (possibly) find out Chloe’s fate.

In other SMALLVILLE news…

Michael Rosenbaum returned to the SMALLVILLE set for the first time in three years late last week. I believe it was too early for him to be filming, unless he was shooting an unannounced appearance for episode 20, possibly a cliffhanger scene. More likely though he was just checking in to prepare for his return. Perhaps meeting with wardrobe for a fitting.

Rosenbaum recently revealed to his hometown newspaper that he will not be shaving his head for this appearance as he had in the past. This time around he will wear a bald cap instead. So it’s possible he had to visit with the makeup department so they can get the cap ready for him.

The SMALLVILLE series finale airs May 13.
