Don’t read this unless you have seen tonight’s episode of SMALLVILLE, ‘Fortune’, or you just don’t mind being spoiled!
If you read part one of this post, you know that I was a little nervous about how tonight’s episode of SMALLVILLE would play out. Would it be the final appearance of Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack)? If so would Chloe’s story receive appropriate closure? My questions have been answered.
Ladies and gentlemen, Chloe has left the building. And with a send-off like that, I would imagine it was for the last time, so don’t hold your breath for Chloe to show up in the finale.
Long story short, the episode basically boils down to this. Chloe has decided she doesn’t want to be Watchtower or the sidekick anymore, she wants to get back to more of who she used to be. She realizes that she has played a big part in helping Clark become the hero he is today and wants to help other heroes outside of Smallville get off the ground as well. It’s hinted that two of the heroes she’d like to help are Batman and Wonder Woman.
So Chloe decides to leave and says she’s going to tell Oliver, but in the end she just takes off. Oliver sees her leave, follows her, and decides to leave with her.
Overall I’d say I’m happy with the send-off Chloe received. It certainly is nice to finally have a character leave the show without becoming a superhero or dying. I suppose Martha Kent didn’t do either of those things, but she did come back as the Red Queen so I group her into that category.
I always wanted Chloe to receive a happy ending, and I’m thrilled that appeared to happen, although I use the word ‘appeared’ purposely.
Chloe left with Oliver. They were happy, hence the happy ending. Problem is, Oliver has been marked by the darkness. We saw the Omega symbol on his forehead in the last episode. Also, in the comics Oliver is married to Black Canary.
The last thing I want to see is Chloe’s happy ending ruined. After what happened to Jimmy, she deserves to be happy with Oliver.
But we all know Oliver (Justin Hartley) is going to be back on the show, so what does that mean for Chloe? I sure hope his return to Smallville doesn’t mean more heartbreak for her.
I’m not sure how I feel about Chloe wanting to go off and help other heroes, I really liked the idea of Chloe just wanting to get back to being the simple, sweet character that she used to be. But she also said that she had landed a position as a reporter in Star City and would be returning to the news reporting business as a day job. I love that!
In my opinion there was not a clear explanation given for why Chloe is not remembered in the future, as was stated in season eight’s ‘Legion’. In the previous episode Chloe said she had deleted her identity, but would that really be enough? What about high school yearbooks, the torch, or just the fact that the others would tell stories about her?
In the end I guess I can accept that Chloe deleted all records that she ever existed, but I would have liked to have had more emphasis placed on that plot point.
I was disappointed to not see Clark wearing glasses in this episode, but I’m not too worried about that just yet. I’m thinking he’s going to start out just wearing them when he’s reporting or working at the Daily Planet. Besides, he spent all of this episode around characters who already know he’s The Blur, so why bother with the glasses?
It was great to see the whole gang together having a great time at the end of this episode. It really gave a sense that they all care for each other like a family. This was a great send-off for Chloe and hopefully it wont be cheapened in the coming episodes with Oliver’s arc.
I’d like to close by saying a big thank you to Allison Mack for the years of hard work she put in on the show and the dedication she has shown to her fans. Because of you Chloe Sullivan will always have a place in the Superman mythology as far as this fan is concerned. Thanks for the memories Allison and best of luck in the future.
